As you may
have seen tonight Mediaworks owners of TV3 played a Target episode
involving SOG.
We are deeply concerned that the producer of Target Simon Roy saw
it fit to employ under 18 year olds and deliberately sent them into
our shop at 36 Cavendish Drive Manukau City. When a representive of
Top Shelf Productions the makers of Target was asked as to why they
did not obey our strict company policy of SOG being an R18 venue with
No Video Filming Voice Recording or Photography as is well sign posted
in every SOG venue for customer privacy. He suggested I get my lawyer
to ring their lawyer; obviously they can’t answer a simple straight
question themselves and want us to spend money unnecessarily on lawyers.
I would like to
apologise on behalf of the company to every SOG customer and anyone
else who is concerned after viewing this heavily edited segment to
suit sensationalism TV.
The staff member
concerned was identified by Target on the 3rd of November, but no
information to identify him from our end was provided untill the 9th
of November. This was way too late for SOG to deal with this incident
as quickly as we would have liked to. Fireworks can only be sold to
the public from the 2nd to midnight on the 5th of November….Target
missed the boat to help us get this sorted urgently.
The staff member
concerned has been with us 6 months and is currently suspended for
his actions. SOG will not be dismissing this staff member as we believe
he has been the victim of a very Targeted twisted attack. He has agreed
that he was probably a little excited by the immense amount of customers
that entered our store over this 4 day period and should have been
a lot more vigilant on ensuring anyone he served was 18 years old.
If and when Target
supply me with the missing 40 plus seconds of footage from this incident,
which they were not willing to show me yesterday, of what happened
before they cut into what appears to be a very poor statement. I stand
by my decision to back our employee and retrain and not dismiss, he
of course will be resitting his Fireworks Handlers licence that he
only gained 2 weeks ago.
I have also today
donated on his behalf, all his outstanding wage bonus money owed ($1000.00)
to www.pawjustice.co.nz
seems like a good cause so SOG encourages others to follow suit.
SOG have spent
many thousands of dollars on staff training and now have around 40
trained licenced fireworks handlers on our staff….but yet Target
is not even checking if the people selling Fireworks have a handlers
licence…..why not ??...this is not to say we aren’t disappointed
that our ERMA handlers training did not seem to be adequate for this
employee.
I have personally
seen fireworks purchased from fireworks stalls that appeared to have
no product certification as required by NZ law……Yet Target
is not checking this either…why not?.. We have spent thousands
of dollars making sure every Firework we sell complies with NZ laws
and is safe for public use?
Why did Target
not target actual customers we had actually served checking if they
were 18, rather than bringing in their own zitty kids?....far better
story I would say and I would like to think there would have been
none.
I would also like
to take this opportunity to thank all those customers who purchased
our range of Pyro Co Fireworks this season it was massive. I also
give my personal assurance that SOG will improve on this unfortunate
incident and will be far stricter on ID with our younger looking customers.
