Ventilation & Odor Extraction

In order for fast growing plants adequate air circulation and ventilation are essential.

Indoors, fresh air is one of if not the most over looked factors contributing to a large harvest. Fresh air is the least expensive element that can be made available to your plants. Experienced growers really understand the importance of fresh air, they spend the time and money setting up the best ventilation.
A 1.5-m x 1.5-m garden will use 20 - 40 litres or more of water every week. Most of this water (70%) is transpired (evaporated) into the air. Every day and night, rapidly growing plants transpire more and more moisture into the air. If this moisture is left in the grow room, humidity increases which stifles stomata causing growth to screech to a halt. High humidity opens the door for pest and disease attacks. When you replace moist stale air with fresh dry air, transpiration will increase and plants begin to grow rapidly.
Airflow is the key to temperature and humidity control. A well balanced ventilation system, will act as climate control for your grow room. Fan capacity as well as configuration, will decide the effectiveness of any ventilation system, a room in which the exhaust fan tries to remove more air than can be replaced will labour to control either temperature or humidity, air removed must be balanced with air replaced to maintain proper airflow.
Find the volume of your room by multiplying the length, depth and height. For example, a room which is 2 meters long (2m) 1.5 meters deep (1m) and 2 meters high (2m) 2m x 1.5m x 2m = 6 cubic meters (6m3) 1 cubic meter equals 1,000 litres of air, so this room contains 6,000 litres of air, in order to remove the total volume of air in this room you will need a fan with a capacity of at least 120 lps (litres per second), hotter or more humid rooms may require greater air exchange.
Any increase in any area of your garden must be accompanied by an increase in ventilation, if you add more light you need to move that heat, if your plants grow faster than previously you need to move the extra moisture, effort spent on air circulation and exchange will result in stronger faster growing plants.
How to stop unwanted odours from escaping your room is a question every gardener will tackle at one time or another. .
There have been many methods of controlling odour, Masking odours using citronella or other heavily scented products, ion generators and Ozone generators to name a few, each method has pros and cons but none were 100% effective without constant adjustment and supervision. Then came Carbon filter canisters and the solution seemed at hand, with no moving parts and 100% filtration the carbon filter has become the mainstay of any good garden, but there are negatives.
Carbon canisters are heavy often 10-20kg or more with cheap shit, hanging one in your garden can prove tricky. They are expensive to ship and damage easily in transit, they are not easily modified, once you buy a 150mm filter you must have a 150mm fan and they are hard to dispose of once depleted. None of these negative aspects have stopped carbon canisters from becoming the best option for your garden. At least until innovation met inspiration in the form of the Odorlok Sok.
The Odorlok Sok. A carbon filter that folds flat, that is less than 2kg when packed but will give 100% odour protection for 12 months! I shit you not.
Odorlok use a unique tri-layer carbon matt system, the fibre is impregnated with ground virgin activated carbon to give an effective odour absorbing area 10x that of the pelletized carbon granules you find in carbon canisters. Just 1 cm square of tri-layer carbon cloth will have the same contact area as a 1cm square 10cm deep carbon canister.
Tri-layer carbon cloth will fold and roll small enough to carry in one hand, simply using the enclosed expanding rings to create a rigid structure you can easily fit over your fan. Because the Odorlok Sok is so light you can easily hang it anywhere without the need for bulky and unwieldy hooks and chains.
The Odorlok Sok allows greater air flow and results in much less pressure loss when using centrifugal fans, the benefit in increase airflow while maintaining 100% odour protection is invaluable especially in the summer months when increased temperatures require greater air movement.
You won’t believe how light, compact and effective they are until you try one for yourself.
